‘Villa Flora’ truly lives up to it’s name!  The landscape at that property is so SPECTACULAR!  I’m plant and tree crazy, so meandering around the grounds is heavenly because the Oaks are magnificent, the Palms majestic, and orchids are blooming everywhere. As one would imagine the home is as remarkable inside as it is outside, with a hint of Tuscany blended in a casual South Florida way.  Anyone who likes to entertain will flip for this updated residence because there  are so many fantastic spaces to host, and they all open onto splendid courtyards and terraces.  The icing on this cake is the little community it lies in, Palms Estates, a little gated enclave of only 6 homes just a few steps away from my favorite Pinecrest hotspots, Pinecrest Wayside Market (home to the greatest smoothies), and Hirni’s Wayside Garden.  You can’t see this home from the gate – you’ll just have to come see it for yourself!

The inner designer in me loved this house!  By the time I was contacted to list this home in central Pinecrest much of the renovation was underway, but I could still see the metamorphosis that had taken place.  I list and sell a lot of mid-century homes in Pinecrest and Palmetto Bay, and this was one of the best transformations I have seen – the integrity of the original design was completely respected while a 21st century face lift was installed. The result was fantastic – a classic ranch style home now shines with a more contemporary persona.  Congratulations to delighful Buyers, their fantastic realtors, and a most wonderful Seller.  It was a pleasure working with all.

If you ask me what my favorite movie is, it’s usually the last one I saw. Ask me what my favorite book is and it will always be the last one I read.  My favorite house? This one, and this is my favorite picture of my favorite house!  There aren’t enough adjectives to describe how special this Pinecrest house is but I can start with warm, vibrant, tropical, one-of-a-kind, and so very South Florida.  It was a home filled with love, laughter, family, and friends for many years, and like many ’empty nesters’ the time came to simplify and move on (what a match; the Buyers were ready to trade the tidy, simplified life of luxury condo living for sprawling estate living!). The beauty of this sale was passing the gavel from one happy family to another…that’s what makes a house a home.

There are some really beautiful homes on the market right now, but I am putting this Island Contemporary home in Pinecrest into the ‘WOW’ category.  To get to my WOW column a house needs to be uber spectacular inside and out, and it can’t be anywhere in the spectrum of cookie cutter.

This gated estate nestled on a picturesque street in the heart of Pinecrest has everything one could desire: a magnificent and tropical acre with South Pacific style pool, rock waterfall,  and wading pond, regulation size basketball half court, al fresco dining pavilion, 2,300 bottle wine cellar, two indoor wet bars, billiards room, fitness room, and the most amazing collaboration of surfaces, textures, and interior appointments you could imagine (i.e. backlit onyx counters).

You’ll fall in love just looking at the pictures!

Could you ask for more than a home with a Coral Gables address, Pinecrest Schools, and a Coconut Grove vibe?  Probably not, and this enchanting residence exceeds all expectations!  First, there’s the superb location on a quiet, no thru street in the Hammock Lakes neighborhood (a neighborhood destined to be guard-gated),  adjacent to vast unspoiled acreage donated by the Matheson family.  Then, there’s the enchanting acre of exotic flora, blooming orchids, nature trails, and  beautiful Florida keystone that is simply awe-inspiring, and finally this one-of-a-kind interior decorator’s home is the most refreshing blend of boheme and South Florida vernacular I have ever seen!  Come see it and you will agree:)

‘Turkel Talks’ About The Mid-Century Modern Phenomena

41xiagkpadl

What are ‘Turkel Talks?’ Insightful, refreshing, informative commentaries about a broad range of topics from Miami’s expert branding guru, Bruce Turkel (Turkel Brands). Bruce helped create noted brands like Nike and Bacardi, has been a captivating speaker at leading universities and television stations (would you like to see his Fox News commentary on the Trump and Clinton campaigns?), and has just authored the best-selling book “All About Them.” I will also boast that Bruce and his wonderful wife Gloria recently bought the coolest house in my neighborhood, an inspiring Mid-Century Modern home that turned the heads of everyone who passed through (I was the listing agent)!

No secret the Turkels are collectors of Mid-Century Modern forms; their art, accessories, furniture, and their homes ooze the era – take a look at the pictures of the home they left behind in Pinecrest (would you like to buy it?)! A recent ‘Turkel Talks’ highlighted the life of Mid-Century Modern – I think you will enjoy the read!  Following is a re-formatted version:

Midcentury Modern

Midcentury modern is a style of architecture, interior design, and product and graphic design that was created from roughly 1933 to 1965. Its development was the work of architects and designers including George Nelson, Eero Saarinen, Richard Nuetra, Arne Jacobsen, Charles and Ray Eames, and more. You know midcentury modern it by its clean lines, pared-down forms, and natural materials. As well as its seamless interaction between both the rooms and the between interior and exterior spaces. In case you’re still not sure, you saw midcentury modern design in all its glory on the show Mad Men.

The midcentury aesthetic was a response to — and celebration of — the new world optimism that erupted with the economic boom after World War II. Architects and designers of the times were willing and encouraged to use new shapes and new materials. They also worked to embrace the revolutionary idea of indoor-outdoor living in their joyful designs.

Midcentury ModernMidcentury has been around for more than 80 years. But stylish consumers – as well as architects, interior designers, furniture manufacturers, retailers, and set designers – are still inspired by the beautiful and sensible approach.

That is why you see midcentury classics such as Saarinen’s Tulip table, Noguchi’s coffee table, Knoll’s sofas, and Castiglioni’s Arco lamp everywhere you look. And it’s why design-forward companies including Design Within Reach, Restoration Hardware, Luminaire, and Herman Miller do such brisk business stocking these classics.

According to The New York Times, midcentury modern remains the rage almost 20 years after it was reintroduced. “If anything, it’s even more popular then ever. Flip through a shelter magazine, shop at a mass retailer like CB2 or West Elm, and it’s all variations on a spiky-legged-chair-and-Tulip-table theme.”

Midcentury Modern

The New York Times quoted “a range of insiders” for their take on midcentury:

LIZ O’BRIEN, 20th-century decorative arts dealer: “I continue to find super-exciting things. That happens often enough to keep me hooked.”

JILL SINGER, a founder of the design magazine Sight Unseen: “It’s beautiful materials, classic simple shapes that can seem timeless.”

Midcentury ModernJIM BRETT, president, West Elm: “I don’t know if there’s another time period with such a prolific amount of beautifully functional designs.”

MICHAEL BOODRO, editor in chief, Elle Decor: “It looks particularly good in lofts, in glass towers. The upkeep is easy.”

There are so many wonderful architectural styles in Pinecrest, from the ‘ranch style’ so common in the 1950’s and 1960’s, to the Mediterranean style so woven into our South Florida culture, and more recently we had the infusion of Florida Vernacular and it’s Key West-style sister, and of course now we have the invasion of the sleek Modern cube.  This beautiful home that I recently sold in North Pinecrest was so special because it had a style all of it’s own.  There was still a little hint of the original ranch style, but with near 9′ ceilings and very clean lines there was a strong sense of modernity, and with a back drop of terracotta floors a warm sense of Spanish prevailed.  Nestled on an epic acre, this ‘home sweet home’ will see years of fun and run, I’m sure.  Congratulations to the Buyers, and to some very special Sellers:)  It was the perfect match.
